Science of hair loss

The hair follicles in your scalp are genetically programmed from birth to either last you a lifetime or wither away and disappear. Those hair follicles that are genetically vulnerable to certain hormones gradually whither away, producing ever thinner strands of hair. Eventually these hair follicles die and no longer produce any hair - the result is baldness.

The cause of male pattern baldness is no longer a mystery.Who will go bald, how much, where, and when is all largely determined at your birth. What determines which hair follicles live or die is largely about how resistant they are to hormone derivatives, such as dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Research has shown that when the male hormone - testosterone is exposed to 5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme in the hair follicle, it produces dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which causes permanent hair loss.

This hormone (DHT) causes the hair follicle to shrink and grow a finer hair that is lighter in color, shorter and less deeply rooted than its predecessor. Most often, the hair in the balding region will continue to grow at an increasingly slower rate until hair growth ceases complete. For men, this permanent type of baldness generally follows specific patterns. Even in the most extensive cases, a horseshoe shaped fringe of hair remains.

This donor fringe is insensitive to the balding process and will last a lifetime. This is because this hair is genetically programmed in the root, or hair follicle, to be resistant to the effects of DHT.

Since the hair used in hair restoration surgery comes from the donor area, which is not sensitive to the balding process, it will be permanent. This hair will retain its genetic characteristics even after relocation . It will grow and continue to grow for the rest of your life.

Evolution of hair transplant

With the concept of hair restoration at least sound in theory, physicians began to perform hair restoration for cosmetic improvement. And like most new developments the first attempts were less than perfect

Yes, doctors learned to successfully transplant hair from the sides and back of the head and grow hair on top, but mostly in clumps that looked unnatural and

This poor aesthetic look is often described as "doll's hair, " "Corn row, " etc

Over the course of years the technique of hair restoration evolved. Hair grafts became increasingly smaller and refined, changing from 15 to 25 hair grafts to as small as one and two hair grafts.

Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation

physicians have perfected a total micro grafting technique called "follicular unit transplantation" . This procedure uses only 1, 2, 3, and 4 hair grafts created from naturally occurring "follicular units".The all microscopic follicular unit procedure has evolved to such a high degree of naturalness that many doctors believe that hair restoration has advanced about as far as it can. After all, you can't get any more natural than using hair as it naturally occurs in "Follicular Hair Units".

Follicles are inserted using the no touch technique in which the follicular unit is introduced in the scalp by the use of the implanter . With the implanter we control.

  • implant depth
  • hair growth angle
  • distance between graft

The patient remain awake throughout the whole procedure. Local anesthesia is used at the donor and recipient site. Following the procedure no precautions are required. This technique is favoured by our clinic as it proves to be the very best in hair implantation.

Obtaining Follicles from Donor site.

There are two methods practised

Follicular unit extraction

Hair Implant UK use the latest non-invasive procedure. The follicles are removed one by one using micro surgical tools. This is a non invasive technique. No scars or complications of surgical wound healing. Although this is a time consuming procedure the benefit remain obvious.

  • No Scars or signs of follicle removal at donor site,
  • No Dressings
  • Fast Healing
Donor Site day one
Donor Site after 2 Weeks
  • No of grafts can be determined by patients needs and financial ability.
  • You can chose from 100 to 1000 follicles in one session.
  • Can return anytime for further treatment.
  • Can use other donor sites on the body.

Classic strip surgery

Method commonly practised : The hair is removed from the donor area by the extraction of a strip of skin 1 cm thick and about 25cm long depending on the number of grafts that is required This is an invasive surgical procedure that requires the donor site to be sutured. Like any invasive procedure there is a risk of excessive bleeding , infection, wound breakdown, permanent disfiguring scars, failure of the hair to grow. The no of follicles wasted due to loss of blood supply or cut at site of incision Can also be Significant.
